SU.RE - Sustainable Resolution is the Indian Apparel Industry’s largest voluntary commitment to sustainability is an initiative by the Clothing Manufacturing Association of India (CMAI), Reliance Brands Limited (RBL), UN in India, and The Ministry of Textiles India aiming to catalyse the industry’s transition towards sustainability.

The SU.RE project is a commitment by India’s apparel industry to set a sustainable pathway for the Indian fashion industry. SU.RE stands for ‘Sustainable Resolution’ - a firm commitment from the industry to move towards fashion that contributes to a clean environment.

Launched in August 2019, the SU.RE Alliance is the initiative of CMAI (Clothing Manufacturers of India and IMG Reliance (now RISE WORLDWIDE), and 16 top Apparel Brands of India at that time including the Aditya Birla Group, the Arvind Group, Bestsellers, Shoppers Stop, AND, Biba, amongst others.

STRATEGIC GOALS OF SU.RE

Commit to the use of natural, regenerative, recycled, and new-generation low-impact materials, emphasizing circularity in processes. Explore and implement business models focused on reuse, resale, and recycling to extend the life cycle of products and reduce waste. Prioritize innovative approaches that contribute to a circular economy and support long-term ecological balance.

Aim for significant reductions in environmental impact by prioritizing water conservation, chemical management, and renewable energy adoption. Set ambitious net-zero carbon emission goals by revisiting supply chains and processes to minimize emissions. Implement strategies that promote energy efficiency and reduce waste across all operations.

Drive systemic change in the fashion industry by committing to improved labor standards, promoting social equity, and empowering women. Focus on initiatives that enhance labor welfare, health, and safety, ensuring ethical practices throughout the supply chain. Support the overall sustainability of the industry by addressing social challenges with inclusive and equitable solutions.

Embrace collective responsibility by collaborating with industry peers to tackle shared sustainability challenges. Engage in collective action to address common issues such as supply chain transparency, resource efficiency, and sustainable sourcing. Foster partnerships that drive progress towards a more sustainable and resilient fashion industry.

Effectively communicate sustainability initiatives to consumers through diverse channels, including online platforms, physical stores, product labels, and social media. Engage consumers in the sustainability journey by fostering awareness and encouraging responsible consumption. Integrate technology to enhance transparency and traceability across the value chain, involving consumers in the process and building trust through clear, accessible information.

Through these actions shift a significant percentage of our supply chain to a sustainable chain by the year 2030, addressing critical global issues such as climate change, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and building a world that is safe for the future generations, as an acceptance of a responsibility we all share.

FUTURE PLANS

  • Signatories will be encouraged to align with SU.RE’s 2025 goals and commit to actionable steps. The initiative will group signatories with similar focus areas and connect them with ecosystem partners to co-develop effective solutions. 
  • Roundtables with subject matter experts at key contextual events 
  • Tailored project plans with measurable targets will be developed to ensure tangible progress, supported by active fundraising efforts. 
 

  • Conduct online and offline Knowledge Sessions
  • Cluster Visits showcasing sustainability practices at factories (e.g., energy efficiency, water, and chemical management).
  • Integrate SU.RE into major events such as roadshows through presentations and branding to highlight the importance of sustainability in fashion.
  • Design targeted knowledge-sharing sessions for MSMEs, introducing SU.RE’s mission and building awareness around sustainability practices and  helping them integrate sustainable practices effectively.

  • Launch the SU.RE Summit, a flagship, day-long event that brings together key stakeholders from the textile, fashion, and apparel ecosystem. It serves as a dynamic platform to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, and collaborate on actionable solutions for sustainability. By uniting industry leaders, manufacturers, innovators, and policymakers, the summit aims to inspire impactful change, drive the adoption of best practices, and accelerate the transition to a sustainable future in fashion.

  • The SU.RE platform will foster a network of sustainable stakeholders by engaging manufacturers, suppliers, and innovators across the supply chain through its website and on-ground initiatives. 
  • Provide opportunities to exhibitors from the sustainability space to showcase their innovations during industry events like the FAB show. Through these initiatives, we aim to shift a significant portion of the apparel supply chain to a sustainable model by 2030.
  • Address critical global challenges like climate change, contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and ensure a safer, more sustainable world for future generations.
